Abandoned Olympic Venues From Around The World Or Why It’s The Biggest Waste Of Money Ever

The Rio Olympics is the 28th Summer Olympic games. The first one took place in Greece in 1896 and since then the event has been held in 19 different countries.

But do you ever stop and wonder just what happened to all of those huge venues purposely built to host the world’s most famous games?Well, take a look at the pictures below and wonder no more, because Bored Panda has compiled a list of abandoned Olympic stadiums and villages from around the world. From Beijing to Berlin, from Athens to Atlanta, these pictures serve to remind us that while the games may be over, the memories live on.

#1 Ski Jump Tower, Cortina D’ampezzo, Italy, 1956 Winter Olympics Venue

Interesting fact about these ski jumping towers is that the Swiss jumper, Andreas Dascher introduced a new style of jumping, which would soon come to be known as the Dascher technique. Before these Games, the athletes would hold their arms forward over their heads. Dascher reasoned that if the athlete held his arms at his side he would fly farther. Adherents to this new style dominated the competition.

NBC Hopes for Twitter Gold Medal at Olympics

Nbc-hopes-for-twitter-gold-medal-at-olympics-video--7f2a2e94d0

The approaching 2012 Olympic games are sure to shatter world records, but NBC hopes to set records of their own with this year’s social media campaigns. And the network is already off to a good start — Twitter reports there were more tweets about the Olympics during only one day of trials than the entire 2008 summer games.

While some fear NBC’s online streaming of the games will be a personal blow to their viewership during primetime broadcasts, NBC tells the Wall Street Journal the streaming gives the network increased opportunity for online chatter.

Twitter and Facebook will be integrated into airings, the WSJ reports, using tools like the “Facebook Talk Meter,” to reveal on air what users are talking about online.

Watch the video above to learn more about NBC’s Olympic social media usage.

Will you be watching the Twitterverse for Olympic reactions this year? Let us know in the comments.

Bette Midler envisions location of Summer Olympics due to ‘climate change’

http://twitter.com/#!/babs721/status/514054014657646592

Bette Midler is sounding the alarm that “climate change” is getting worse, and as you can see many agree in their own unique ways.

What could the future hold?

UB meeting this week to discuss Climate Change after hottest summer ever. At this rate we'll be holding Summer Olympics in Antarctica soon..

— Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) September 22, 2014

This summer, Antarctic sea ice broke an all time record, so it might be a little too chilly there for swimming and beach volleyball for the foreseeable future.

@BetteMidler Funny…we've heard that same mantra every Summer for years. Then later, the recorded temps are "readjusted" for truth.

— HOT FM PARIS TEXAS (@HOTFMPARISTEXAS) September 22, 2014

Yep.

One response to Midler was not the wind beneath her wings:

@BetteMidler Such a clever woman, stick to singing, you are good at that.

— John Hollioake (@johnhollioake) September 22, 2014

@johnhollioake go fuck yourself

— Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) September 22, 2014

Confirmed: Climate change is making for short tempers.
